Josef Preindl (1756-1823): “His music has not been thoroughly studied…but in his lifetime it was widely circulated and continued to be known for some time after his death”(NG1). The Creation was first performed 29/30 April 1798.

Fiske (in NG1) describes Reeve (1757-1815) as a “prolific English theatre composer of negligible talent”. In English Theatre Music his music is variously described as “very poor indeed” “deplorable” and “despicable”. There is some indication of instrumentation in both the above items.

This is a later issue of Schlesinger’s Collection complète, first published as a whole in 1827, the Late Quartets having first been published separately, with the same plate numbers, as authentic editions (see Tyson: Maurice Schlesinger as a publisher of Beethoven, Acta Musicologica, 1963). This issue is certainly printed pre 1846, and was probably sold after 1844. The frontispiece & facsimiles noted by Tyson are not present in this issue.

Bourgault-Ducoudray won the Prix de Rome in 1862.
